I know exactly what you were writing about in regard to another person talking about something that you already knew, but had forgotten you knew it. I've been there, and I know the feeling you expressed.

Also, I believe there are occasions where people have known about and used a technique, and then moved on to try something else, because the first approach wasn't quite living up to their expectations. But with the passage of time, we have gained more knowledge, and when we are again reminded of a tool from the past....we now know how to more effectively impliment it today. Trying it now, may very well give you a much better result than you orginally experienced.
