Generally, when someones refers to a electrolyte imbalance they are referring to an imbalance of minerals. Generally, this imbalance is due to a lack of certain minerals. Occassionally you can have no much of a particular mineral. Too much copper, zinc, potassium and iron can lead to very serious problems. Heart problems can develop from an overdose of these types of minerals.
It is possible to develop heart problems from persistent deficiencies. Heart problems from either of these situations are rare as far as we know.
